On October 28, 2024, the Pathology Program held an engaging seminar for NPPC staff covering key concepts in genetics and molecular diagnostics. Here’s a summary of the topics discussed:

• DNA & RNA Basics – Understanding the molecules of life and their functions in storing and transmitting genetic information.
• PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) – Learning how this technique amplifies DNA, enabling us to analyze even minimal samples.
• Sanger Sequencing – Discovering one of the foundational DNA sequencing methods to determine nucleotide order with precision.
• Data Cleaning for Sequencing – Essential steps to refine sequencing data, ensuring accuracy for analysis.
• BLAST for Species Identification – Using BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) to identify species through genetic sequence comparisons.
• LAMP (Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification) for Bacterial Disease Identification in Potatoes – A powerful tool for detecting bacterial pathogens in crops, helping us address agricultural challenges.

Additional topics included wheat rust identification and using biocontrol agents for pest management. This workshop was conducted as a part of the ongoing AFACI PMP+ Project.
