Awareness Campaign on Safe and Efficient Use of Pesticides

The National Plant Protection Centre conducted an awareness campaign on the Safe and efficient use of pesticides at Gangteng Gewog, Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkhag on 12th August 2024. The campaign was conducted with a fund support from the Bhutan For Life project, aimed to educate the local farming community on critical aspects of pesticide use. The campaign was attended by 300 farmers and featured representatives from Bhutan Food and Drug Authority (BFDA) and the Royal Centre for Disease Control (RCDC) under Ministry of Health.

The main objectives of the campaign were to educate farmers on safe and effective use of pesticides, create regulatory procedures for importing pesticides and to highlight the health risks associated with pesticide use.

The NPPC provided detailed guidelines on the proper use of pesticides, covering topics such as application techniques, safe storage and handling procedures. The presentation emphasized the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE) and following recommended practices to minimize environmental and health impacts. Bhutan Food and Drug Authority (BFDA) explained the regulatory framework for pesticide import. The presentation included information on the necessary documentation, approval process and compliance with safety standards. The representative from the Royal Centre for Disease Control (RCDC) presented on the potential health risks linked to pesticide exposure, including both acute and chronic effects. The presentation highlighted symptoms of pesticide poisoning, preventive measures and the importance of seeking medical attention for health issues related to pesticide use.

The campaign engaged the local community through interactive sessions and discussions. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification on various aspects of pesticide use. A similar awareness campaign is scheduled to be held in Phobji Gewog on 19th August 2024.

Mrs. Yeshey Dema joined the civil service on 26th February 1996. She headed the Soil Fertility Unit, NSSC from 2008 till 2013. In 2013, she was transferred to the National Plant Protection Centre as the Program Director. She holds M. Phil in Soil Science from the University of Reading, UK.
